A waveform is a measurement of one or more attributes over a period of time.  An example of a waveform is the pattern of waves recorded on an electrocardiogram (ECG).  ECG waveforms are generally displayed on specialty workstations for cardiology, since the existing standards (IEEE and DICOM) to exchange this data are not widely supported.
