A PACS administrator ensures that a PACS is operating efficiently, that it is supporting the institution’s mission, and that the integrity of images and information is assured.  Depending on the PACS adminsitator's background, experience, and work environment, the various roles filled by a PACS administrator can be formalized into the following roles:

PACS Associate

The PACS Associate provides basic support for the PACS. Duties include end-user training, first-tier support, and system integrity maintenance such as resolving issues with unidentified studies. Core competencies include basic IT skills (knowledge of major operating systems, data representations, networking technology and security) and basic clinical skills (basic medical terminology knowledge, human anatomy, radiology imaging basics, process flow, and handling of prior and outside exams). Equivalent certification: PARCA CPAS. 

PACS System Analyst

The PACS System Analyst is the most common type of PACS professional, and is responsible for clinical and workflow functions of the PACS. Competencies include a detailed knowledge of PACS processes such as acquisition, viewing, archiving, and general integration. PACS implementation and administration knowledge is important as well. Furthermore, security and privacy concerns as well as other PACS applications should be familiar. A PACS System Analyst may have one or more PACS associates assisting them. In larger institutions, a PACS System Analyst might report to a PACS Manager. Equivalent certification: PARCA CPSA.

PACS Interface Analyst

The PACS Interface Analyst focuses on connectivity and integration, with a strong emphasis on IT skills. Competencies include detailed knowledge about DICOM (negotiation, messages, image headers, services, image quality, media, conformance statements, networking, and troubleshooting), HL7 (messaging and troubleshooting) and IHE (integration profiles). These professionals often work in tandem with the PACS System Analyst, or, a professional might cover both skill sets. Equivalent certification: PARCA CPIA.

PACS Manager

The PACS Manager applies personnel and project management skills to direct multiple PACS professionals in different imaging departments such as radiology and cardiology. A PACS manager may also be responsible for several institutions with multiple PACS installations. PACS managers are often professionals that have evolved into their role from previous employment as a PACS System Analyst or a PACS Interface Analyst.

PACS Administrator/Imaging and Informatics Professional (IIP)

The PACS Administrator/IIP has broad responsibilities, often filling all of the roles described above. In many cases, the PACS Administrator/IIP is the only person supporting the health imaging and informatics/PACS system. This is a generalist who needs clinical and technical skills as well as management and teaching experience.
